Previous to the introduction of the Slottabase in 1984 all minitures had their feet firmly cast into a small peice of ground. These figures generally have molded, integral shields, rather than the thin plastic ones more prelevant on the later slotta figures.
Solid based minitures tend to be more closely related to Warhammer 1st edition and character-classes from fantasy role-playing games, such as Runequest or AD&D than to strict army-list types. Sculpturally they tend to be more naturalistic and true to the 25mm scale, rather than the stylised proportions in vogue amongst miniature manufacturers, or more folksy and niave.
